AQUIND Interconnector will increase competition across energy markets, improve security of supply and help foster greater renewable power integration.
Welcome to our Information and
AQUIND Limited (‘AQUIND’) is the developer of AQUIND Interconnector, a new underground and subsea electric power transmission link that will connect the UK and French electric power grids.
If approved, AQUIND Interconnector will increase competition across energy markets, which could mean
lower energy prices for consumers and businesses. It will improve security of supply, help foster greater renewable power integration and supply ancillary services, which will provide greater flexibility in managing the electricity grid.
AQUIND Interconnector will have the capacity of 2,000 MW and transmit up to 16,000,000 MWh* of electricity each year between the two connected countries, which is 5% and 3% of the total consumption of Great Britain and France respectively, enough to keep the lights on in millions of households.
AQUIND Interconnector will use well-tested and reliable technology. Without overhead lines, the project strives to achieve the lowest possible visual impact.
At present, it is estimated that AQUIND Interconnector will become operational in 2022.
AQUIND is committed to consulting with the local community, local representatives and local authority officers in order to achieve the best possible scheme, with the input of all parties.
As part of our commitment to community engagement, a number of consultation events will be held in January 2018 to enable local people to view the proposals, speak with the project team and provide us with your feedback before we submit planning applications to the local authorities along the underground cable route.
We will update this website with further information as the plans progress.
* The actual utilisation rate of the interconnector depends on market conditions, limitations by national transmission system operators and other factors.
